The Challenge:

What can we do in the next 5 years to make accessible, liveable housing available to everyone?

Did you know that only 32% of Barrie’s resale-property prices meet the definition of affordability? As housing rates continue to rise, the average rents in Barrie remain among the highest in Canada and many people are spending astronomical amounts to afford a home.

Affordable housing for everyone means enabling all residents to find suitable living space without spending a disproportionate percentage of their income. It encompasses a range of housing types, including ownership, rental and social housing – and it’s a growing issue in Barrie. As a complex and multi-faceted issue with no single cause or solution, it’s our responsibility to use our collective efforts to generate results.

The Barrie District Association of Realtors (BDAR) and the City of Barrie have teamed up to engage the Barrie Community and to find solutions to this affordable housing crisis. There is no shortage of data framing the issue or potential avenues to explore to begin solving it.
